There was a young actress in the cast who was quite nervous. I think it was her first film. Anyway, Bette had been very helpful to her early on, and they were doing a scene together. The director decided to do the close-ups the next day, which was a Saturday, so Bette wouldn’t be there for the young actress to speak to off-camera. Bette had Saturdays off. The actress appeared on Saturday morning, more nervous than ever, because it’s very difficult to speak lines to nobody. But she wasn’t alone. Bette was already seated beside the camera, in full make up, ready to listen to her and reply. Now, that’s dedication and compassion!
